National Research Center at Yunnan University for Studies of Borderland Ethnic Minorities in Southwest China
Faculty of Social Sciences, KU Leuven, Belgium
Faculty of Arts,University of Antwerp, Belgium
Theme: History . Memory . Anthropology
Aims: The themes of history and memory are widely recognized to have become significant interests and sources of data in anthropological studies of socio-cultural phenomena, in so far as these themes impart rich cultural symbolic meanings in the cultural awareness of various peoples. From ancient times, the Chinese have developed sophisticated and diverse systems for remembering the past, including their use of a writing system. As anthropology in China becomes more Sinicized, it is important to use an anthropological perspectives to understand more deeply the attitudes towards, and cultural significance of, history and memory among various ethnic groups, thereby illuminating cultural theory from the point of view of the so-called “others”.
This summer school and fieldwork experience will utilize experiences of historical anthropology that have been developed both in China and elsewhere but will apply these perspectives in conducting research on the ethnic groups of southwestern China. The summer school will include teaching on research methods in the field of history and memory, along with relevant theoretical ideas, in order to help graduate students and young scholars in conducting field research on topics such as family histories or memories, ancestral halls, temples, genealogies, rituals, linguistic change, oral histories, and so on. In turn, such studies can then give greater insight into wider issues such as public power relations, the interaction between ethnic groups and nation-states, or between margins and the center, as well as regional and national histories.
Period of Study: July 12-30, 2015
Lecture sessions will be held at the Auditorium in the Wenjin Building A of Yunnan University, in the campus located at No.2 North Greenlake Road, Kunming, China.

Fieldwork in theory and practice
Case study analysis
The fieldwork practice requires residence in one of the ten ethnic minority settlements for a ten day period. Students will conduct their fieldwork on issues of history and memory under the guidance of one or two teachers in each group and will be expected to complete a report on their research experiences.
The lecturers are not only from China but also from other countries and represent a range of multidisciplinary backgrounds including anthropology, ethnology, sociology, political science and economics.
